Many-flowered sprays of small fragrant pea flowers, with a distinct bract at the base of each stalk. Triangular pod.

Dry well drained clay soil on drier slopes of mountain forests to 1800m. Frost and snow tolerant. Full sun to dappled shade.

Hedge or screen plant in shady sites. Can be pruned to shape. Leaves were used to replace hops by early settlers.
