Description
Small wiry to compact shrub with smooth bark on smaller stems, shedding in stringy strips.

Leaves
Leaves narrowly egg-shaped, broader towards the tip, pointed, concave, 3-13mm x 1-4mm.
Flowers
Masses of open flowers to 15mm across, sepals tiny, hairy only on base of calyx. Capsules not persistent.

Growing conditions
Moist sandy soil in heathlands. Light frost. Full sun to semi shade.
Commonly used for
Attractive in open moist soil, tolerating poor drainage. Good for bog gardens. Pruning beneficial.
