Goal of the Position: To provide a welcoming, respectful and safe
environment to enable participants to come together to form friendships,
create support networks and share activities and speakers.
Responsibilities:
• Hold meetings, as scheduled.
• Meet and greet attendees on arrival introducing any new members to the group.
• Lead the group to ensure each meeting is purposeful in achieving the goals and activities and providing a nurturing atmosphere.
• Liaise with Community Centre staff to arrange for speakers/presenters for the group as needed and or themes or special events. • Work with group to clarify meeting content, objectives and to establish ground rules that govern behaviours.
• Support a consensus building model in terms of group decision making
• Encourage participants to provide friendship and support to one another Group Dynamics
• Set the tone for appropriate behaviour of the group through empathy, humour, and openness.
• Work with group dynamics to bring out the best of each participant and build a network within the group.
• Maintain confidentiality and respect among all
participants within the group
• Open up discussion amongst participants and build a strong sense of group sharing by listening to others in the group
• As a group facilitator, you must be comfortable with working with
group dynamics while managing the group meeting or activity. Be aware
of making observations and recognizing when interactions, situations or
group dynamics change.
• Promptly intervene if there are disruptive behaviours to disperse or extinguish them. Get things back on track with appropriate suggestions or redirecting group efforts. Work with the group to resolve conflict and return to goals.
• Communicate directly to the Community Centre Coordinator or Manager when there is conflict within the group.
