Bookable hard waste
About this service
- Each Cardinia household can book 2 free collections per year.
- This service is for large/bulky household items that can’t be reused and only for residential properties with a Council kerbside waste service.
- You must book your collection before putting any waste out.
- Hard waste piles must not be larger than 2 cubic metres (2m x 1m x 1m) for a single booking, or 4 cubic metres (4m x 1m x 1m) for a double booking.

Before booking consider selling or donating good quality items
Some hard waste items are recycled, including e-waste, scrap metal, mattresses, tyres and green waste. But everything else including furniture, toys and general household items are crushed and sent to landfill.
You can help reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill by considering alternatives before you book a hard waste collection.
For good quality items consider:
- donating them to a charity (always check with the charity before dropping your items off)
- giving them to family or friends
- selling or giving them away using online platforms / marketplaces
- holding a garage sale
How to make a booking
- For a single booking, your hard waste pile must be within 2 cubic metres (2m x 1m x 1m).
- You can also make a double booking, where you get one free collection for the year which can be double the size of a regular booking. The hard waste pile must be within 4 cubic metres (4m x 1m x 1m).
- Only put out the allocated amount of waste for your booking. *Waste exceeding the booked amount may not be collected, or additional entitlements may be taken to collect additional waste.
- Always book before putting any items out.
- Only put items out the weekend before your collection week, no earlier.
- Putting items out early might cause other people to add unacceptable items to your hard waste pile and you will be responsible for any waste that cannot be collected.
- If you’re moving house, book a collection at least 2 weeks before your move out date to ensure all your waste is collected before you leave. Any items remaining after you leave is considered dumped rubbish and may incur a fine.

- Select a collection week (Please note: bookings are limited and can fill up weeks in advance. To make sure you don’t miss out, book early or consider booking your collection for the middle of the year when bookings are quieter (i.e April – September).
- You will need to tick the item categories you want collected to ensure all items are picked up in your allocated week.

What can not go in hard waste
The below items are not accepted in hard waste. For more disposal options check our A to Z waste guide.
- NO paint including dried paint in tins - take to Paintback
- NO household chemicals – use Detox Your Home
- NO batteries (household) - check our A to Z waste guide for battery drop-off locations
- NO batteries (car) - take to a transfer station
- NO car springs, engines, gearboxes or differentials - take to a transfer station
- NO building, renovation or demolition material - take to a transfer station
- NO food, general waste or recyclables - use your household bins
- NO commercial waste - take to a transfer station
- NO untied green waste or stumps – take to a free green waste drop off event or a transfer station
- NO grass clippings, weeds or leaves – put in your green waste bin or take to a free green waste drop off event

- NO Barbed wire, fencing panels or fencing wire take to a transfer station
- NO Gas bottles - take to a transfer station
What if my hard waste hasn’t been collected in the allocated week?
If your hard waste has not been collected please wait until after 4pm the Friday of your booked collection week before contacting Council.
To report a missed collection:
- Call 1300 787 624 and follow the prompts for hard waste
- Send an email to mail@cardinia.vic.gov.au
Some of my items were left behind after collection
If items are left behind, drivers will leave a notice outlining any issues with the collection. Items may be left behind because:
- your pile was oversized (larger than the booked amount)
- you presented items that we do not collect - check the accepted items list.
- individual items weighed more than 30kg or were longer than 1.5 metres.
You must return remaining items to your property as soon as possible and either book another collection or take remaining items to a transfer station.

What if someone has added items to my hard waste pile?
To prevent others adding to your hard waste pile, please only put items out the weekend before your booked collection - no earlier.
If someone has added to your items – please contact us as soon as possible. If you report it early, it is more likely we can arrange to have all items removed at the scheduled time.
Call us to change or cancel a booking
To change or cancel a booking: Call 1300 787 624 and follow the prompts for hard waste.
- Changes and cancellations can only be made over the phone.
- Please contact us a minimum of 7 days before your booked collection week.
I’ve used my two free collections, but I have more hard waste
If you have used your two free collections , you can pay for up to two more collections.
- You can use the booking portal to check how many collections you've had this calendar year, and to pay for additional collections.
- Additional collections are $100 each.
- All rules and instructions about free collections (as stated on this page) also apply to paid collections.
What happens to my waste?
Hard waste items may be collected by different trucks at different times throughout your collection week depending on where it needs to go.
E-waste
Taken to Sircel Recycling or eWastec where items are sorted and processed for precious metal recovery and recycling.
Scrap metal
Taken to eWastec where items are sorted and processed for metal recovery and recycling.
Tyres
Are collected and then processed by Beaurepaires for recycling and energy recovery. Beaurepaires are a member of the Tyre Stewardship council of Australia. Your tyres may be used in playgrounds, construction or even a new road.
Mattresses
Are taken to Soft Landing where they are broken down and separated into each material type. One mattress may become roof sheeting, carpet underlay, mulch, kindling or acoustic panelling.
Green waste
Turned into compost at Cleanaway's South East Organics Facility (watch a video about the facility)
All other items
Are collected and taken to landfill. Please consider repairing, selling or donating quality goods before placing out for hard waste.
