Better local roads in Rythdale
Sealing upgrade works are now complete on McGregor Road and Soldiers Road in Rythdale.
The entire length of McGregor Road and Soldiers Road, from McGregor Road to Hobson Road, were sealed as part of Cardinia Shire Council’s $25 million Better Local Roads - Strategic Sealed Roads project.
Works included:
- road pavement construction
- kerb and channel construction
- drainage works and signage
- guardrails and line markings.
Westernport Ward Councillor Kaye Cameron said the project is playing a significant role in building a better Cardinia Shire.
“The Strategic Sealed Roads project creates strategic links to existing sealed roads in locations where they are needed most, such as McGregor and Soldiers Roads, which are high-traffic areas. Sealing these roads should reduce traffic on the local unsealed road network and improve comfort and service level for drivers.”
“I’d like to thank residents within the Westernport Ward, and the wider community, for their patience during these works,” said Cr Cameron.
Council aims to reduce the environmental impacts from road projects such as sealing works, developing the Strategic Sealed Road project and wider Better Local Roads Program in line with council’s 2018-28 Sustainable Environment Policy.
More than 1500 tonnes of recycled glass were used in the crushed rock pavement along McGregor and Soldiers Roads, decreasing the amount of quarried materials required in the pavement.
Wildlife sensitive lighting has been installed along McGregor and Soldiers Roads, as part of a wider trial within the shire.
The wildlife sensitive lighting uses warm, amber coloured lights that are directed down at the road to reduce light spill and glare. Amber lights have reduced blue-white light and are more natural, which helps promote and maintain key biological processes such as sleep, behaviour, feeding, growth, development, and reproduction in local native wildlife.
Further sealing works on Hobson Road from Ballarto Road to Soldiers Road are still being completed.
