From the Mayor's Desk
A message from Cardinia Shire Mayor, Cr Jack Kowarzik.
G’day Cardinia Shire,
This year, we celebrate a big milestone: the 30th anniversary of Cardinia Shire Council. Over the past three decades, we’ve witnessed our community grow, adapt, and thrive in the face of both opportunities and challenges.
Cardinia Shire has transformed into a dynamic, diverse municipality. From the rapid expansion of our urban centres to the careful preservation of our stunning rural landscapes, we’ve built a community that reflects our shared values. Our growth has been marked by milestones that define our future — such as the opening of the Cardinia Cultural Centre, the development of award-winning recreation reserves and the expansion of vital services that support families, youth, and seniors. These achievements are great examples of what we can accomplish when we work together.
But our journey has not been without hardship. Natural disasters, economic pressures and the global pandemic have tested our resolve. Yet, what has always shone through is the remarkable resilience of our community. In the face of adversity, we’ve shown time and time again that when we come together, we can overcome even the toughest of challenges. This spirit of unity and determination is what makes Cardinia so special.
I’d like to take this moment to extend my sincere thanks to the many people who have contributed to the success of our community. To the past and present Mayors and Councillors whose leadership has guided us and to the wonderful residents of Cardinia Shire — your commitment to our community is what makes this place truly great. I’m honoured to have been re-elected as your Mayor and I look forward to working with all of you to continue building a better future for our shire.
As we reflect on the past, we must also look ahead. Our journey continues and the future holds new challenges, as well as exciting opportunities for growth.
Next year will be important for shaping the next 4 years of Council’s direction with the development of our new Council Plan. This document will set out where Council will focus its budget and resources over the next few years. It’s a critical piece of work that involves those it impacts – you, our community. You will have the opportunity to get involved and help shape the future of the shire. I strongly encourage you to participate if you can and, for those of you with young people in your families, please encourage them to get involved too – the voices of our youth are so important.
I would also like to highlight the return of the "Meet the Mayor" sessions, so keep an eye out for these (details to be published on my Facebook page). These informal sessions are a great opportunity for residents to share ideas, concerns, or simply have a chat about what’s important to you. I encourage everyone to get involved, as your voice is vital in shaping the future of our community.
As we approach the holiday season, it’s important to acknowledge the mental health challenges that many of us may face during this time. The festive period can sometimes bring added pressure and for some it can feel isolating. Please remember that support is available and it’s okay to ask for help. If you or someone you know is struggling, I encourage you to reach out to the many national and local services and support networks that are here for you.
Finally, I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe, happy holiday season. Take time to relax and enjoy the company of loved ones but also take care of yourself. Please be mindful on the roads and ensure your bushfire plans are in place as we enter the summer season.
Looking forward, let’s continue to work together to build a Cardinia Shire that is inclusive, sustainable, and resilient. Here’s to the next 30 years of progress, partnership, and community spirit!
