Celebrating diversity in our community on IDAHOBIT Day

Published: 10 May 2019

The Cardinia Shire community is invited to come together for a flag raising to recognise the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

Cardinia Shire Council encourages a sense of belonging for all people within our shire and supports an inclusive community of people.

Rebekah Robertson will be a guest speaker at the IDAHOBIT Day event. Rebekah Robertson is an advocate for transgender rights. Her family’s court journey has spanned six years, including an appeal before the Family Court to remove legal obstacles to treatment for trans children.

In 2011 Rebekah’s daughter Georgie Stone was the youngest person to receive puberty blockers in Australia, and in 2013 a landmark ruling in her case meant that no other child had to go to court to access blockers. Georgie and Rebekah continued to advocate for law reform until 2017 when the Family Court overturned the law, ending the involvement of the courts altogether.

Rebekah established Transcend in 2012, the first peer-led support network for families of transgender children in Australia. Transcend provides information, advocacy and raises funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital Gender Service through its RCH Foundation Auxiliary. All funds raised go directly to supporting research and longitudinal studies into the health and wellbeing outcomes of the children accessing the service. Transcend has been nominated for an Australian LGBTI Award in the Community Initiative/Charity category and Rebekah was nominated for the GLOBE Straight Ally of the Year in 2016.
