Active, outgoing, over 55 and a Cardinia local? We want you!
Cardinia Shire Council is on the look-out for friendly and outgoing community members aged 55 years and over to volunteer as Ageing Well Community Connectors.
The Ageing Well Community Connectors will be part of a new program designed to support fellow seniors following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
“With 22% of Cardinia Shire residents aged 55 years and older, Council is working hard to offer a range of supports and services for our older community members requiring social, emotional or practical support following the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Councillor Brett Owen.
“Our intention is to help those who might be feeling lonely or have lost contact with their regular networks during the pandemic to build social connections with likeminded people and local networks of support,” he said.
Since the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, the opportunities to get involved in local community activities and groups such as the University of the Third Age, neighbourhood houses or men’s sheds are returning.
“Sometimes all you need is a little nudge or even a wingman to join you on your first visit to a new group. It can be hard to get out and about if you’re by yourself, but a little moral support and a friendly face makes the world of difference as you try to navigate the world as we re-emerge post COVID-19,” said Cr Owen.
Community Connectors will also offer emotional support through regular phone calls and catch ups as well as practical help such as running errands or helping people to video chat with friends and family. Connectors will also be able to link participants into online book clubs, fitness groups or volunteering opportunities.
Registrations to attend the Ageing Well Community Connector information session are now open.
Council is looking for active and friendly residents of Cardinia Shire who are over 55 and:
- can volunteer 2- 5 hours each week over the next 12 months
- have basic computer skills
- hold a current driver's license
- importantly, want to support their peers to get out and about
